HOUZZ Australia Pro Panel: The Material I Love to Work With Most....

Houzz Australia has just published another instalment of its "The Pro Panel" series.

This panel gives their opinion on

"The Material I Love to Work With Most..."

Thank you to Houzz for inviting me to be a part of the panel.

One of my favourite materials to work with is Corian. It is a non-porous, man-made material composed of acrylic resin and natural minerals. It’s an extremely versatile material that can be used to create almost anything including vanity basins, wall panelling, tabletops and even bath tubs. It’s most commonly used in the home for benchtops. It can be curved and rolled into almost any shape and the joins are invisible. It’s also a renewable surface, so in the unlikely event that it gets damaged, it can be repaired on site.

I love to use it on kitchen benchtops and seamlessly return the surface up the wall behind the bench to create an upstand with no joins. I also love the fact that any number of sink bowls can be worked into the benchtop using the same material and, again, with no open joins. It’s such a great material to work with as a designer and clients love its durability and hygienic qualities.

HOUZZ Australia Pro Panel: The Design Rule That Is Ok to Break...

Houzz Australia has just published another instalment of its "The Pro Panel" series.

This panel gives their opinion on "The Design Rule That Is Ok to Break...."
Thank you to Houzz for inviting me to be a part of the panel.

Interior Designer Anne Ellard of Anne Ellard DesignOne design rule that I have never been able to follow myself and therefore completely condone the breaking of is sticking to one style in a room or entire home. I call it the catalogue look – everything matching and perfectly coordinated as if it was all just freshly delivered from an interiors showroom. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t dislike this look or encourage people away from it; I just prefer a more natural, eclectic look that incorporates different styles and pieces from different eras to create a relaxed, lived-in look. I guess it stems from the fact that I don’t favour any one style or era – I embrace all styles from contemporary to traditional and love mixing and matching.

HOUZZ Australia Pro Panel: The Biggest Kitchen Design Blunder You Could Make

Houzz Australia has now published the second instalment of its new editorial series "The Pro Panel".

This time Houzz asks seven experts, "What is the biggest kitchen design blunder you could make?"
Read my answer, and that of six other industry experts over on the Houzz website (link below).

Interior Designer Anne Ellard of Anne Ellard DesignIn my opinion, the biggest design blunder that a lot of people make in any part of their home, but particularly in the kitchen, is not going with their heart and feeling they should follow the latest trends. Trends, like fashion, come and go, and what was the ‘in thing’ five years ago could, quite possibly, be considered dated today. I encourage clients to consider two main factors, first and foremost, when working together on the design of their new kitchen. One is the style and era of their home, and the second is their own personal taste. The shiny white kitchen on the cover of a magazine, for instance, may not be the right choice for you or your home. HOUZZ Australia The Pro Panel: The Best Advice I Ever Received

Houzz Australia has just published the first instalment of its new editorial series "The Pro Panel".

The first panel asks seven experts one question, "What is the best advice you ever received?"
Thank you to Houzz for inviting me to be a part of the panel.

Interior Designer Anne Ellard of Anne Ellard Design: The best advice I ever received was to never ask a client what their budget is. There are plenty of ways that you can determine a client’s budget without directly asking them. It’s such an awkward question that no one likes to be asked and it can make clients feel very uncomfortable. I can always determine a client’s rough budget by discussing different options with them and talking them through the pros and cons of each along with approximate price points – that way they can make an educated decision as to what the best option is for them depending on their budget.
